This shrine is located in Oda-cho, Nyu-gun, Fukui Prefecture, and is properly called Tsurugi-jinja. The deities enshrined are Susanoo-no-mikoto, Kehi-no-Okami, and Oshikuma-no-mikoto. It is said that the shrine was named Tsurugi-jinja because Emperor Ojin's brother Oshikuma-no-mikoto was given a sacred sword by the shrine's chief deity, Susanoo-no-mikoto, and used it to defeat bandits. It was called the second shrine in Echizen Province, and later became a small, national shrine. In 771 (Hōki 2), an imperial decree was issued to grant food and rice fields to Tsurugi-jinja, and according to a temple bell (national treasure) inscribed with the date of September 11, 770, which is in the shrine's possession, there was a shrine temple called Tsurugi-miko-ji.
