Ryozen

Japanese: 良全 - りょうぜん

Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. A painter from the end of the Kamakura period to the Northern and Southern Courts period. Also written as Ryosen. He was once confused with the ink painter Kao Niga, but they are different people. Most of his works are Buddhist and Taoist paintings that incorporate ink painting techniques, so he is considered to be a painter of the Ebutsu-Buddhist sculptor type. Although his background is largely unknown, there is a theory that he was from Kyushu, based on the signature ``Ryozen, a man from the West of the Pacific''. In addition, based on the transmission and supporters of his works, it is thought that he was active mainly at Tofuku-ji Temple in Kyoto. In recent years, a ``Buddha's Nirvana'' painting at Honkaku-ji Temple in Fukui was discovered, and the signature on it reads ``Painted by Ryosen, a man from the West of the Pacific, February, 3rd year of the Ka calendar (1328),'' providing an indication of his active period. His surviving works include ``The Sixteen Arhats'' (owned by Kennin-ji Temple), painted for Tofuku-ji Temple, ``White-robed Kannon'' (owned by Myo-ko-ji Temple) with ink painting by Kenho Shiton, and ``Manjusri Riding a Lion'' (owned by Masaki Museum of Art) with ink painting by Kenho Shiton. <References> Eiji Akazawa, "On the Painting of the Buddha's Nirvana by Kaiseijin Ryosen" (Kokuka, No. 1045)

鎌倉末から南北朝期の画家。良詮とも書く。かつては水墨画家可翁仁賀と混同されていたが別人である。作品のほとんどが水墨画法を加味した仏画,道釈画であるため,絵仏師系の画家とみられる。伝歴はほとんど判明しないが,「海西人良全筆」という落款から九州出身説がある。また,作品の伝来,賛者から京都東福寺を中心に活躍したと考えられる。近年,福井本覚寺の「仏涅槃図」が発見され,その落款に「海西人良詮之筆嘉暦第三(1328)二月」とあることから,活躍期を示すひとつの指標が与えられた。現存作として東福寺のために描かれた「十六羅漢図」(建仁寺蔵),水墨による乾峰士曇賛「白衣観音図」(妙興寺蔵),乾峰士曇賛「騎獅文殊図」(正木美術館蔵)などがある。<参考文献>赤沢英二「海西人良詮筆仏涅槃図について」(『国華』1045号)
