A Chinese dactyl. A general term for instruments made of metal with a plate-shaped body struck with a mallet, which are forged after casting. In contrast, a gong is a gong that is cast only. The instruments come in various sizes, but all have holes drilled into the edge, through which a string is passed, and are hung in the left hand and struck with a mallet in the right hand. It is clear that they have been used since the Northern and Southern Dynasties, but since the Song Dynasty, they have been incorporated into theatrical music and have become popular, with large and small gongs playing a particularly large role in Peking opera. A combination of gongs is known as the cloud gong. They were also introduced to Japan, where they were used as gongs in Buddhist ceremonies, as well as gongs for various signals.
