A renga master in the mid-Muromachi period. He was called Kokanken and Soenbo. Born to the Inawashiro family, a prominent Aizu clan, he studied under Shinkei, who lived in the Kanto region, in his youth and was greatly influenced by him. He went to Kyoto around 1475 (Bunmei 7) and, with the support of Sogi, began his career as a renga master called Soharu, but later changed his name to Kanezai. In 1489 (Entoku 1), he was appointed as the magistrate of the Kitano Kaisho and master of the school, and together with Sogi and his disciples, he compiled the Shinsen Tsukubashu (1495). In his later years, he mainly lived in the Kanto region, and passed away in Koga, Shimousa Province (Koga City, Ibaraki Prefecture). He is estimated to have died at the age of 59. His works are characterized by fresh, sharp sensibility and intellectual expressions, but he also wrote a poem with a mysterious atmosphere, such as the opening line of "The Karasaki Cape of Shiga dawns in the mist" with "A bell rings on the Nagareyama mountain on an autumn night." His collections of poems include "Sonochiri" Volumes 1 to 4, and his renga treatises include "Shinkei Sozu Teikin," "Renga Entoku Sho," "Wakakusayama," "Baikunshu," and others. His heir, Shishi Kanezumi, served the Date family, and his descendant, Kanenyo, and his descendants continued to serve as renga masters for the Date family until the end of the Edo period.
