Jordanus de Nemore

Japanese: ヨルダヌス（英語表記）Jordanus de Nemore

A mechanician and mathematician active around 1220. Also written as Jordanus Nemorarius. Nothing is known about his life. In works such as Jordanus' Elements Concerning Weights, he discussed balance in a beam balance or on an inclined surface using "positional weight" (corresponding to the concept of component forces), and applied the principle of work to prove the principle of the lever, making unique contributions to statics. He also wrote the extensive 10-volume Arithmetic, and showed his originality by using letters to represent numbers in On Given Numbers.

1220年ころに活躍した機械学者，数学者。Jordanus Nemorariusとも書く。生涯についてはまったく不明。《重さに関するヨルダヌスの原論》等で，桿秤（さおばかり）や斜面でのつりあいを〈位置的重さ〉(分力の概念に相当)により論じ，仕事の原理を応用して〈梃子（てこ）の原理〉を証明し，静力学に独自の業績を残した。また浩瀚（こうかん）な《算術》10巻も書き，《所与数について》では数表示に文字を使用するなど独創性を示している。
