Japanese: 咄∥噺∥話 - はなし

Terms and characters used when referring to Rakugo on various levels. Although there is not necessarily a strict distinction, the characters for 'banashi', 'hanashi', and 'hanashi' are often used as follows, depending on the circumstances of their creation and historical usage. The kanji character 'banashi' did not originally mean 'story', but was an onomatopoeia for a scolding voice such as 'aa' or the sound of clicking the tongue, but it seems that the reading 'hanashi' was added around the Muromachi period, and an example can be seen in the 'Bunmeihon Setsuyoshu', which was established in the early 16th century.

落語に関してさまざまなレベルで言及する場合の用語･用字。必ずしも厳密な区別がなされているわけではないが，咄･噺･話のそれぞれの字の成立事情，歴史的慣用等の違いによって，しばしばこれらの字が以下のように使い分けられる。　〈咄〉という漢字に，本来〈はなし〉の意味はなく，〈アア〉というような叱る声，舌打ちする音などの擬声語であったが，室町時代ごろから〈ハナシ〉という訓(よみ)が付けられたらしく，16世紀初頭成立の《文明本節用集》にその例を見る。
