A village in Ishikawa County, southern Ishikawa Prefecture. Population 1,501 (1995). The Tedori River runs along the western border of the village, and apart from a small area of lowland along the river, the steep mountainous area of Mt. Hakusan makes up most of the village's territory. To the east it borders Toyama and Gifu prefectures. From ancient times to the Middle Ages, the village was known as Michi-go, and was the base for pilgrimage routes to Mt. Hakusan. With little arable land, the village has depended heavily on mountain livelihoods since early modern times, but in recent years it has been trying to increase production of shiitake mushrooms and nameko mushrooms. In the Taisho period, construction of power plants utilizing the abundant water resources of the Tedori River was promoted, and as of 1997 there are five power plants within the village.
