Yoshino cedar

Japanese:
Yoshino cedar
The main production area for cedar is the Yoshino River basin in Nara Prefecture. Due to the favorable natural conditions, afforestation began early on, and it is said that cedar seedlings were planted in the early 15th century from Mt. Miwa and Mt. Kasuga in Yamato, and in the mid-Edo period, cedar species from Yakushima were introduced and improved. Cedar lumber was transported down the Yoshino River to Wakayama Port at the mouth of the river, and then sent by sea to the Osaka market. There was a high demand for lumber for sake barrels (tarumaru) in sake brewing areas in the Kinai region.
