A film that uses suspense to create a psychological sense of fear. The techniques of the thriller film are also used in horror films and detective films, and the range of applications is wide. German Expressionist films such as Das Kabinett des Dr. Caligari (1919) and Dr. Mabuse (22) established the style of the thriller film, which combined the bizarre with criminal elements. Director A. Hitchcock further refined this genre, producing a succession of thriller films, including The Thirty-nine Steps (35), Rebecca (40), and Shadow of a Doubt (43). Other excellent works were produced in other countries, including the French director H.-G. Clouzot's Les Diaboliques (54).
