Architect. Born in Nihonbashi, Tokyo. Graduated from the Department of Architecture at Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1923 (Taisho 12). Studied in Europe and the US from 1925 to 1926. Returned to Japan and began design work, establishing his own unique style of modernizing traditional sukiya architecture. He began teaching at his alma mater in 1941 (Showa 16), and became a professor at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1949. After retiring from government in 1986, he devoted himself to design. His main works include the renovation of the Tokyo Kabukiza Theatre (1951), the Japan Art Academy Hall (1958), the Goto Museum of Art (1960), Yamato Bunkakan (1960), and the Japan Cultural Institute in Rome (1962), as well as homes for artists and writers such as the Umehara Ryuzaburo House and the Yoshiya Nobuko House. Became a member of the Japan Art Academy in 1954. Received the Order of Culture in 1989. After his death, the Yoshida Isoya Award for architecture was established.
