A marine fish of the Carcharhinidae family in the Carcharhinidae order. It is said to have been named after its pointed head, large eyes, and long pectoral fins, similar to those of the bird Carcharhinus. Its English names include blue shark, great blue shark, and blue whaler, after its body color. It is found widely in the open ocean from the tropics to the subarctic regions of the world. It can reach a total length of 4m. It has a slender body, long snout and pectoral fins, and saw-shaped areas around the teeth on both jaws. Its body is indigo blue and its belly is white. メジロザメ目メジロザメ科の海産魚。鳥類のヨシキリに似て頭がとがり,眼が大きく胸びれが長いところから名付けられたという。英名は体色にちなんでblue shark,great blue shark,blue whalerなどという。全世界の熱帯から亜寒帯にかけての外洋域に広く分布する。全長4mになる。体がほっそりとし,口先と胸びれが長く,両顎歯の周辺がのこぎり状であることが特徴。体は藍青色で腹面は白い。
