In modern zoology, arachnids are called Arachnida, which comes from Arachne, the Greek goddess of arts and crafts, who competed in a weaving contest with Athena, who angered her and turned her into a spider. Spiders are almost universally considered to be animals that reveal the will of God, and in ancient Rome they were believed to announce changes in the weather and environment.
