Although it is a term referring to a field of pottery in Greek and Roman archaeology, there is no clear definition of the concept as a type classification. However, it is generally believed to have originated from Hellenistic pottery of the 2nd century BC, such as Pergamon pottery, which was made by covering pottery pieces with decorative patterns formed using a matrix and firing them with a quartz-rich slip (cream-like clay). The firing temperature was around 800°C, the same as terracotta, but because refined clay was used, it was characterized by being thin and hard.
