Modena is the capital of the province of Modena in the Emilia-Romagna region in northeastern Italy. It has a population of 175,442 (2001 census estimate). It is a key transportation hub located on the Via Emilia in the plains south of the Po River. In addition to its traditional role as a distribution center for agricultural products, Modena is also home to thriving agricultural-related industries such as food processing, agricultural machinery, and chemical fertilizer manufacturing. It also produces sports cars. It is home to the University of Modena, founded in 1774. Other historical buildings remaining include the Romanesque cathedral (11th-13th century) with its 87-meter Ghirlandina bell tower, the Doge's Palace (17th century), now a military academy, and the Este Museum. [Kenichi Sakai] World Heritage RegistrationThe cathedral, together with the adjacent Civic Tower (Torre Cibica) and Piazza Grande, was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 1997 under the title "Cathedral of Modena, Torre Cibica and Piazza Grande" (World Cultural Heritage). [Editorial Department] historyIt was founded as an Etruscan settlement. With the construction of the Via Emilia, it became a Roman colony in 183 BC. Its Latin name is Mutina. A bishopric was established in the 4th century AD. In 1288, it came under the control of the Este family, who were already based in Ferrara. In 1452, Borso d'Este (1413-71) of the same family obtained the title of Duke of Modena, and in 1598, Ferrara became a church territory, and it became the capital of the Duchy of Modena. The Este family continued to rule until it was occupied by French troops in 1796, and many buildings were built in memory of them. The Austrian Este family's rule was restored with the Restoration, but in 1860, the duchy was dissolved by a referendum and annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.
