This is a genre of ukiyo-e from the enlightened period at the end of the Edo period, which was painted with an emphasis on introducing foreign customs and customs, set in Yokohama, which opened its port in 1859 (Ansei 6). It is characterized by exoticism, and was influenced by Nagasaki woodblock prints, which were produced in Nagasaki, the only trading port at the time. The subjects include the enlightened customs of Yokohama after the port opened and scenes of foreign settlements, as well as foreign landscapes and tigers and elephants for exhibitions, inspired by imported copperplate prints. The works can be roughly divided into two periods, based on the content and quantity of the subjects: the early period from 1860 (Man'en 1) to 1865 (Keio 1), just after the port opened, and the later period from 1866 to 1872 (Meiji 5).
