Oose - Oose

Japanese:
Oose - Oose

A general term for a family or genus of the order Orectolobidiformes, or the name of one of its species. Sharks of the Orectolobidae (English name: wobbegongs) are characterized by a flattened body, a mouth at the front end of the body, and various skin flaps (cortical projections) around the head. The back of the body has complex patterns of various shades of brown, which serve as camouflage among rocks and seaweed. The Orectolobidae family consists of three genera: Eucrossorhinus , Sutorectus , and Orectolobus . Only one species, O. japonicus (English name: Japanese wobbegong), is known in the waters off Japan. This species is found from the coast of southern Japan to the South China Sea. They often lie motionless on the seabed waiting for prey, but care must be taken not to accidentally step on their bodies and be bitten by their sharp teeth. Adult fish reach a total length of about 1.2 meters, reproduce viviparously, and give birth to up to 27 young. They are caught with bottom trawls in the East China Sea and other areas, and are enjoyed in Nagasaki Prefecture and other areas. They are listed as Least Concern (LC) on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List (as of September 2021).
