Shrimp Bug - Shrimp Bug

An insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae. This is the only species known from the Pentatomidae family in Japan. It is distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Okinawa, the Korean Peninsula, and China, and mainly lives on flat land. Body length is 14 to 18 mm. The body is light yellowish brown. The head is triangular. Both the proboscis and antennae are short. It parasitizes Japanese silver grass and moves around the leaves rather inactively. In May and June, it lays around 14 eggs in two rows on the undersides of leaves. The larvae have a distinctive flat body shape. They emerge around August and overwinter as adults.

昆虫綱半翅(はんし)目エビイロカメムシ科に属する昆虫。日本のエビイロカメムシ科には、本種のみが知られる。本州、四国、九州、沖縄、朝鮮半島、中国に分布し、主として平地に生息する。体長14～18ミリメートル。体は淡黄褐色。頭部は三角形を呈する。口吻(こうふん)、触角ともに短い。ススキに寄生し、葉上でやや不活発に行動する。5～6月に、葉裏に14個前後の卵を2列に並べて産卵する。幼虫は特徴のある扁平(へんぺい)な体形をしている。8月ごろに羽化して、成虫で越冬する。
