A commercial and industrial city on the eastern edge of Kansas, USA. Population 143,000 (1994). It is separated by the Missouri River from a larger city of the same name on the Missouri side, and together they form Greater Kansas City. Formerly called Wyandot, the state constitution was drafted here when Kansas joined the Union as a free state. In 1861, it was designated the eastern terminus of the transcontinental railroad. The city is a thriving center for the shipping of agricultural and livestock products, but the oil and automobile industries are also important.
