A skyscraper in Manhattan, New York. It is 222.2 meters tall. It was designed by Cass Gilbert (1859-1934) as the headquarters for the businessman Woolworth, and was completed in 1913. Since 1870, skyscrapers in New York have tended to have a tower on top of the main building to make it look taller, with stepped walls and decorative exteriors, but this building is a prime example of this. Its late Gothic exterior has earned it the nickname "cathedral-style commercial building." Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
