The Legend of Henry

…He is known as the Prince of Navigation, and is considered the greatest contributor to Portugal's overseas expansion, but is one of the most controversial figures in Portuguese history. In the 15th century "The Voyage of Guinea" (1841), which is the basic source, he is emphasized as a crusader who was enthusiastic about conquering Muslims, but by the 19th century, the so-called "Legend of Henry" had been formed, which said that he was a Renaissance wise man who established a navigation school in Sagres near Cape St. Vincent, the southwestern tip of Portugal, and planned an expedition to India, and he was eventually deified as a prophet who opened up the destiny of Portugal. In Japan, Tetsuro Watsuji, in his book "Isakoku" (1950), gave his own evaluation of the rulers who closed the country's doors to foreign countries in the 17th century, comparing them with Henry, who led Portugal's overseas expansion in the 15th century, but at the same time, the legend of Henry was introduced to Japan as it was. …
