Olsztyn (English spelling)
The capital of Warminsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship in northeastern Poland. It is called Allenstein in German. It is located on the Wina River in the middle of the Mazury Lake Zone. It developed after the Teutonic Knights built a castle for the Warmia (Elmland) Diocese in the mid-14th century. It became part of Poland in 1466, but was annexed by Prussia in 1772 during the First Partition of Poland. Half of the town was destroyed in World War II, but it was rebuilt after it was returned to Poland in 1945. It has a large tire factory and a food factory, and is a key railway point in the Mazury region. It is an educational city with many historical ruins, such as the Gothic cathedral and the Warmian Cathedral (now the Mazury Regional Museum). It is also a famous tourist destination as it is the base for the Mazury Lake Zone. Population: 173,102 (2002).
