Hosokura mine

This lead and zinc mine is located in Uguisuzawa, Kurihara City, northwest of Miyagi Prefecture. It is located on the southeastern foot of Mount Kurikoma. Mining began during the Tensho era (1573-1592), and in the early modern period it was developed and operated by the Sendai Domain. Silver was initially mined, but lead production later increased. During the Genroku era (1688-1704), demand for lead as a material for silver and copper smelting increased, and the mine flourished. The Sendai Domain obtained tax revenues and permitted the mine to operate as a mining operation, purchasing lead bullion and selling it to wholesalers. After the Meiji era, modern management led to the mine's annual lead production becoming the largest in Japan in 1895 (Meiji 28). The mine then boomed due to increased demand for zinc. The mine was managed by Kyoritsu Mining and then Mitsubishi Mining, and production volume declined after peaking in the 1950s. The mine closed in 1987. The former mine site is now a tourist facility called Hosokura Mine Park.

宮城県北西部、栗原市(くりはらし)鶯沢(うぐいすざわ)にある鉛・亜鉛鉱山。栗駒山(くりこまやま)南東麓(ろく)に位置する。採掘の開始は天正(てんしょう)年間（1573～1592）からで、近世には仙台藩が開発、経営し、最初は銀を採掘したが、その後鉛の生産が増加した。元禄(げんろく)期（1688～1704）には銀・銅製錬の材料としての鉛の需要が増え、鉱山は隆盛期を迎えた。仙台藩では運上をとって山師経営を許可し、鉛の地金を買い上げて問屋に払い下げていた。明治以降は近代的経営により1895年（明治28）には鉛の年間生産額は全国一となった。その後、亜鉛需要の増加により好況を迎えた。共立鉱業、三菱鉱業(みつびしこうぎょう)と経営体は変化し、昭和30年代のピーク以後産出量は減少。1987年（昭和62）閉山した。現在は鉱山跡を利用した観光施設細倉マインパークとなっている。
