[Born] Yonghui 1 (650)
[Died] Kaiyuan 9 (721). September 3. Luoyang. A famous minister of the Tang Dynasty, China. Born in Shanzhou (Shan County, Henan Province). His real name was Yuan Chong. His courtesy name was Yuan Zhi. During the reign of Empress Wu Zetian, his talents were recognized and he held important posts. He then became prime minister many times during the reigns of Zhongzong, Ruizong, and the early period of Xuanzong, where he purged the government and worked to stabilize the people's livelihood. He retired in Kaiyuan 4 (716) and was succeeded by Song Jing. He was praised as the meritorious minister who brought about the "Kaiyuan Reign" (→ Kaiyuan and Tianbao Reign), and "Yao Song" became synonymous with the famous minister of the Tang Dynasty. It is a famous anecdote that, despite the reverence of Buddhism and Taoism at the time, he left a will stating, "Do not invite monks or Taoists."

中国,唐の名相。陝州 (河南省陝県) の人。本名は元崇。字は元之。則天武后の時代に才能を認められて要官を歴任し,次いで中宗,睿宗から玄宗の初期にかけてしばしば宰相となり,国政を粛正し,民生の安定に努めた。開元4 (716) 年引退し,跡を宋 璟 (えい) が引継いだ。「開元の治」 (→開元・天宝の治 ) をもたらした功臣とたたえられ,「姚宋」は唐の名相の代名詞となった。仏教,道教の尊崇される時勢にもかかわらず,「僧侶や道士を招くな」と遺言したのは有名な逸話。
