A method in which a strong flash of light causes a photodecomposition reaction in a sample, producing intermediates such as free radicals and ions, and detecting them. This method is also called flash photolysis. Triplet and other electronic excited states can also be observed with this method. Rare gas discharge tubes and air gaps are used as flash light sources. A large-capacity capacitor (1-1000 μF) is connected to both ends of these light sources, which are then charged with a high voltage of 10-20 kV and then instantly discharged, resulting in a strong flash that lasts for about 1-10 μs.
