…It can refer to a school of miniature painters from the Carolingian and Ottonian dynasties from the 8th to 10th centuries, but generally refers to a group of painters who were active in Cologne in the 14th and 15th centuries. Most of them are unknown, but one of them, Meister der heiligen Veronika, who was active in the early 15th century, is well known. There are not many surviving works by this painter, named after his painting Saint Veronica Holding the Shroud, but his style, which makes use of flowing, graceful curves, is representative of the Soft Style, which could be called the German version of the so-called International Gothic style of the time, and the warm humanity and pious religiosity that permeate it, are also characteristic of the Cologne School. …
