The firstborn of Typhon and Echidna was a two-headed dog called Orthros, who had had sex with Echidna and gave birth to the Sphinx and the Nemean Lion, both of which were fearsome monsters. On the island of Erytheia, at the western edge of the world, Orthros was guarding a herd of cattle belonging to the three-headed, six-limbed giant Geryon, but was easily defeated by Hercules, who had traveled a long way to retrieve the herd as one of his 12 labors. …
