Bible Society

Bible Society

An organization that translates, publishes, and distributes the Bible in cooperation with Christian churches and for the purpose of serving evangelism. The first Bible society was established in England in 1804. The society was founded by the passion of a poor girl named Mary Jones, who fervently searched for the Bible and wanted to read it. Currently, Bible societies have been established in countries around the world, and they translate, publish, and distribute the Bible in their respective countries. There are over 100 societies in Europe, America, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific Islands, and the United Bible Societies (UBS) was formed to cooperate and coordinate with them. Currently, through the activities of these societies, approximately 500 million Bibles are distributed around the world every year, and the number of languages in which the Bible has been translated has reached 1,829 (report at the end of 1985).

In Japan, the British and American Bible Societies had been operating separately since 1875 (Meiji 8), but in 1938 (Showa 13) the Japan Bible Society (JBS) was established and has taken over all of the activities of both societies. To date, it has published the "Written Bible" in 1888 and the "Colloquial Bible" in 1955 (Showa 30), and has translated the "Joint Translation of the Bible" since 1970. Now, more than 10 million Bibles are distributed in Japan every year.
