A town in Kasuya County in the mid-west of Fukuoka Prefecture. It is on the eastern edge of the Fukuoka Plain, with the Sue River flowing west through the center. From the mid-Meiji period onwards, the town developed due to the Shinbaru Naval Coal Mine in the Kasuya Coalfield and the Shime Coal Mine which straddled Shime Town, but both mines are now closed. The Kashii Line runs through the town, and it is becoming a satellite city of Fukuoka City. The remains of Sue ware kilns remain. 16.31 km2 . Population 26,044 (2010). 福岡県中西部,粕屋郡の町。福岡平野の東縁にあり,須恵川が中央を西流する。明治中期以降粕屋炭田の新原(しんばる)海軍炭鉱,志免(しめ)町にまたがる志免炭鉱により発展したが,現在は閉山。香椎(かしい)線が通じ,福岡市の衛星都市化が進む。須恵焼の窯跡が残る。16.31km2。2万6044人(2010)。
