Taipei Imperial University

Taipei Imperial University

National Taiwan University was established in March 1928 (Showa 3) under the Imperial University Act in Taiwan under Japanese rule. On November 15, 1945, it was taken over by the Republic of China and became National Taiwan University. It was considered to be on an equal footing with other imperial universities, but the duties of the Minister of Education were performed by the Governor-General of Taiwan, except for the approval of doctoral degrees. When it was first established, it was small, with a Faculty of Literature and Political Science, a Faculty of Science and Agriculture (initially 13 courses), and an affiliated Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry. By the time of its takeover, it had expanded to five faculties (Literature and Political Science, Science, Agriculture, Medicine, and Engineering) (total of 114 courses), three affiliated research institutes (Institute of Tropical Medicine, Institute of Southern Humanities, and Institute of Southern Resource Science), a preparatory school, and an affiliated Faculty of Medicine. Research that took advantage of the regional characteristics included folklore, ethology, South Seas history, tropical agriculture, and tropical medicine. Tu Chongming, professor of pharmacology in the Faculty of Medicine, is known as the only Taiwanese professor. Other than the Faculty of Medicine, only a few students had a high school diploma. In some years, the majority of students enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine were Taiwanese, and in 1943, more than 40% of the assistant professors were Taiwanese. For a while after the takeover, many Japanese, including professors at Taipei Imperial University, were appointed to the faculty of National Taiwan University, helping to support the transition to Taiwan University. The current National Taiwan University continues the history of Taipei Imperial University.
