...The name Walata appears in the writings of Italian geographers of the 14th century, and the great Arab traveler Ibn Battuta visited this town (which he called Iwaratan) in 1352, stayed there for 50 days, and then walked for 24 days to the capital of the then Mali Empire. Ibn Battuta describes this town as the first black country (Sudan) to travel south from the Sahara, and states that the majority of the residents were Massufa merchants, who are thought to be a tribe of Moors, and that goods from North Africa were unloaded and traded here. He also writes that there were fresh water wells, that date palms and watermelons were cultivated, that there were many sheep, that the residents wore good Egyptian clothing, that women had a high status, and that matrilineal succession was respected, the last point reminiscent of the influence of the matrilineal succession of the nomadic Tuareg people of Western Sahara. *Some of the terminology that mentions "Massufa" is listed below.
