A wandering madman who appeared in Russian monastic life. In Eastern Christian monastic life, complete solitude was sought for ascetic practices, and the life of a hermit was considered one ideal, but the idea arose that complete solitude could be achieved in secular life by pretending to be insane. Monks who adopted strange and unconventional lifestyles or pretended to be insane out of love for Christ were called saloi in Greek, and they appeared in large numbers in the East, especially in Syria. Representative figures are the 6th century Egyptian hermit Symeōn Salos, and the early 10th century Scythian Andreas Salos of Constantinople, famous for the legend that the Virgin Mary appeared to him while he was praying.
