Agnus Dei (English spelling)

Agnus Dei (English spelling)
(1) Agnus Dei, also called the Divine Lamb. A phrase in the liturgical text of the Mass or Eucharist in the Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Lutheran, and Anglican churches. Latin for Lamb of God. Source: John 1:29. It was recited at the breaking of bread in the Latin Mass. It was recited monotonously following the priest's response to the Pax Domini, and three times as the priest recites the three Eucharistic prayers before receiving Communion. It concludes with dona nobis pacem (grant us peace). According to the Episcopal Rites, Pope Sergius I was the first to introduce the Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, misere nobis (Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us), but it is also said to be merely a formal compilation of various chants from the early Roman liturgy. Until the time of Sergius I, the division of the Eucharist in the Roman Church was performed silently, and by the late 8th century it was considered the role of the clergy. In the 9th century, the various divisions were reorganized, and the prayers were gradually narrowed down to three, the sacred number. Today, in the Roman Catholic Church, the Lamb of God is recited in the vernacular language of each country following the liturgical reform. (2) Lamb of God, symbol of Christ. In early Christian art, it is depicted in the wall paintings of the catacombs and elsewhere. In the late Middle Ages, Van Eyck's Gan Altarpiece depicts this image.
