Katsureki means "live history" and refers to historical period kyogen that respects historical facts and was performed by Ichikawa Danjūrō IX from the early Meiji period to the 1880s. Riding the wave of the government's policy of appointing actors to the role of instructors for the enlightenment of modernization and theatrical reform movement, Danjūrō attempted to reform the historical period plays of Kabuki, which had been historically absurd up until that point, by obtaining new and revised plays by Kawatake Mokuami and Fukuchi Ochi, and by first researching the truth of the lines, costumes, props, and sets, and then trying new realistic direction. The plays were not well received by the general public, and Danjūrō abandoned katsureki in his later years, but his direction and acting had a great influence on later generations, paving the way for the later promotion of historical dramas. His works include "Jinshin Kato," "Ise Saburo," "Kasuga no Tsubone," "Omori Hikoshichi," and others.
