They are also called Kalmuks or Karmouks. The name given by Europeans to the Mongolian Oirats. It is a corrupted version of the Qalmaq, which the Turkic peoples of Central Asia called them. Traditionally they are nomadic, with a strong patrilineal kinship system and extended families. They currently live in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China, as well as in Kazakhstan and the Republic of Kalmykia in Russia. Their population in Russia is about 160,000.
