Mount Yufu - Yufudake

Japanese:
Mount Yufu - Yufudake

A volcano located in central Oita Prefecture, on the border between Beppu City and the Yufuin district of Yufu City. The Bungo no Kuni Fudoki states that the mountain was named Yufu-no-mine because of the nearby Yufu-no-sato, and the Man'yoshu refers to it as Mt. Yufu. It is also called Bungo Fuji, but it is a bell-shaped volcano made of pyroxene-containing amphibole andesite lava, and its base is not very well developed. The summit is divided into two peaks, Higashi-no-dake (1,583 meters) and Nishi-no-dake (1,584 meters), with an incomplete crater-like depression 60 to 70 meters deep between them. The summit offers excellent views of the Kuju volcanic group, Mt. Hiko, and Mt. Sobo, and the area is beautiful with Miyamakirishi flowers in summer and frost in winter. The Kyushu Trans-Kyushu Highway runs along the southern foot of the mountain, and the trailhead, Ikkenya, is at an altitude of 780 meters. It is part of Aso Kuju National Park.
