A disease of day-old chickens infected with Salmonella pullorum . It is a legally-contagious livestock disease with a high mortality rate and results in the excretion of white diarrheal stools. Chicks show severe symptoms, but when they become adults, some individuals stop laying or develop collective diarrhea and only excrete the bacteria for a short period of time. The disease in chicks and adult chickens is sometimes collectively called Salmonella pullorum disease. Approximately 30% of eggs laid by infected hens carry the bacteria, but the presence of the bacteria does not reduce fertilization or hatching rates.
