New Cinema (American)

Japanese: ニュー･シネマ（英語表記）(American) New Cinema

This expression was first used in the American weekly magazine Time (December 8, 1967 issue), which featured director Arthur Penn's film Bonnie and Clyde (1967), in a sensational headline that read, "New Cinema, Violence, Sex, Art! The Shock of Hollywood's Awakening to Freedom!" This coming-of-age film, full of "anarchic violence," depicts the short and intense life of a duo of male and female gangsters who robbed banks in the American Midwest during the depression, and was followed by director Dennis Hopper's Easy Rider (1969), which also depicted "lawless youth," and became a huge hit, exciting young audiences.

この表現が初めて使われたのは，アーサー･ペン監督《俺たちに明日はない》(1967)を特集したアメリカの週刊誌《タイム》(1967年12月8日号)の，〈ニュー･シネマ，暴力，セックス，芸術！　自由にめざめたハリウッドの衝撃！〉というセンセーショナルな見出しのなかであった。不況時代のアメリカ中西部の銀行を荒らしまわった男と女の2人組のギャングの短く激烈な人生を描く，この〈アナーキーな暴力〉にみちた青春映画に次いで，やはり〈無法の青春〉を描いたデニス･ホッパー監督《イージー･ライダー》(1969)が，若い観客層を熱狂させて大ヒット。
