A general term for insects belonging to the superfamily Coccoidea in the order Hemiptera. They are generally known as pests of fruit trees, shrubs, and ornamental plants. They consist of more than a dozen families, including the families Pseudococcidae, Pseudococcidae, Scutellaria brevis, and Diaspididae, and are phylogenetically close to aphids (worms). There are 6,000 to 7,000 species known worldwide, and about 400 species known in Japan. Most species secrete waxy or resinous substances from numerous tiny secretory pores distributed on the surface of their bodies to form a unique insect body covering that attaches itself to plants and lives a parasitic life.
