Yufuin [town] - Yufuin

Japanese: 湯布院[町] - ゆふいん

A former town in Oita County, central Oita Prefecture. It is centered in the Yufuin Basin upstream of the Oita River, and occupies the slopes of volcanoes such as Mt. Yufu. Rice is cultivated in the basin and valleys. Livestock farming is also thriving. Yufuin Onsen is a group of hot springs occupying the northeastern part of the basin, and is a national health resort with simple springs, heavy springs, and other springs with temperatures ranging from 42 to 98 degrees Celsius and an extremely plentiful supply of water. There are also hot springs at Yunohira in the south and Tsukahara in the northeast. The town is connected by the Kyudai Main Line and the Oita Expressway. In October 2005, it merged with Hasama Town and Shonai Town in Oita County to become a city, Yufu City. Area: 127.77 ^km2 . Population: 11,596 (2003).
