Youngstown - Youngstown

Youngstown - Youngstown

A city in northeastern Ohio, USA. Located near the border with Pennsylvania. Population 82,026 (2000). Since its founding in 1803, it has always prospered as one of the largest centers of the steel industry in the United States, but since the late 1970s, the steel industry has declined due to the closure and relocation of major steel companies' factories, and many steel workers have been laid off. However, other industries have made remarkable inroads, and automobile and aircraft parts, plastics, rubber, office equipment, and paper manufacturing maintain high standards nationwide. The town was established in 1797, and the opening of the Pennsylvania-Ohio Canal in 1839 and the railroad in 1853 promoted the development of the steel industry. It is also excellent in terms of education and culture, with several universities such as Youngstown University (established in 1908), a symphony orchestra, a ballet company, and many parks and golf courses that are popular places for citizens to relax.
