An insect belonging to the family Formicidae in the order Hymenoptera of the class Insecta. It is found throughout Japan, Taiwan, and China. The worker ants are about 3 mm long. Their bodies are dark brown with lighter antennae and legs. Their heads and thoraxes have coarse, mesh-like wrinkles. They nest in existing vacant spaces such as hollows in trees, under stones, and gaps in houses. They travel to feeding areas in long lines. They also often move their nests in lines. They are unique among ants in that they do not have a queen caste and reproduce only with worker ants through parthenogenesis. A small number of males may be produced, but they are not thought to be involved in reproduction.
