[died] June 19, 1878. Princeton. American Presbyterian theologian. Leader of the Princeton School. Professor of Biblical Theology at Princeton Theological Seminary (1822) and Professor of Systematic Theology at the same university (40). He was an active writer, producing many commentaries, histories of the Presbyterian Church, systematic theology, and books for young people. He was a defender of moderate Calvinism. For 46 years he edited the "Biblical Repertory and Princeton Review," which published nearly 150 articles. His main work was "Systematic Theology" (3 volumes, 71-73).
