Their main meal was dinner (cena), which usually consisted of three courses. The first course (gustum or promulsis) consisted of eggs, salad, salted fish, sausages, or dormice, and was accompanied by wine with honey (mulsum). This was followed by a main course (cena prima), usually consisting of roasted or boiled fish, poultry, or meat (such as pork, rabbit, boar, deer, wild goat, or sheep), and wine diluted with water. …
