① sipāhi: Turkish cavalry that supported the development of the Ottoman Empire and formed the core of its military power. ② sepoy: Indian mercenaries organized by the British East India Company. In the 16th century, the number of cavalrymen was estimated at about 40,000, and they were given fiefs called timars by the Sultan. They received tax revenue from the land they held, and participated in battles with a number of retainers according to the area of the land. Sepahi means "soldier" or "military" in Urdu, and they were known as sepoys, an English pronunciation of the word. They were made up of Muslims and upper-caste Hindus, and were mobilized not only to fight against France, but also in wars against neighboring countries such as Burma, and fought as the main force.
