Lake Hjälmaren (English spelling)

Lake Hjälmaren (English spelling)
Located in southern Sweden, this is the country's fourth largest lake (area 480 km2), 61 km from east to west, 21 km wide, and 20 m deep at its deepest. Two rivers flow into it from the west, and to the east it is connected to Lake Mälaren by rivers and canals (Stockholm is at the eastern end of this lake). This area was the site of a strait connecting the Baltic Sea and the North Sea 6,000 to 7,000 years ago, and the sedimentary rocks on top of the solid bedrock were selectively eroded by ice to form the lake basin. Farming has been practiced around the lake since ancient times, and it was a key route for east-west transportation, and in the 1870s it underwent major renovations to prevent flooding.
