Mr. Kokubu

Japanese: 国分氏 - こくぶうじ
Mr. Kokubu
A powerful clan in Shimousa in the Middle Ages. A Taira clan of the Chiba clan. One of the Six Chiba clans. It began when Chiba Tsunetane's fifth son, Tanemichi, was given Kokubu-go in Katsushika County. Tanemichi also lived in Motoyahagi Castle in Katori County, and was granted lands in Oshu, Totomi, and Mikawa. According to the Azuma Kagami, in 1180 (Jisho 4), Tanemichi and his family met Minamoto no Yoritomo at the Shimousa provincial capital, and in 1182 (Juei 1), he brought a bow and arrow to celebrate the birth of Yoriie. In 1184 (Genryaku 1), he participated in the Battle of Ichinotani, and in 1189 (Bun'ei 5), he also served in the Oshu Conquest. The main Chiba family declined during the Nanboku-cho and Muromachi periods, but Tanemichi's descendants continued to operate, using Motoyahagi and Osaki castles as their bases and possessing Otosho (present-day Sawara City).
