A haiku poet from the early Edo period. His family name was Ito. His real surname was probably Yamada. He was commonly known as Sukezaemon. His other names were Rishien and Takeinuko. He was from Kyoto. He was from a wealthy merchant family and initially studied under Takase Baisei of the Teimon school, but from the beginning of the Enpo era (1673-81), he came into contact with Takamasa and Tsunenori of the Danrin school and became interested in the Danrin school. In 1677 (Enpo 5), he went down to Edo and interacted with Basho and others, publishing "Edo Sangin," and in 1681 (Tenwa 1), he published notable anthologies such as "Nanahyakugojuin," which explored a new style, thus in step with Basho and others, sparking the development of Basho-style haiku. He continued to interact with Basho and others after that, and during the Genroku period (1688-1704), he played an important role in the Kyoto haiku world along with Gonsui, Josen, Wagyū, and Gakoku, but later became estranged from the Basho school. He edited and wrote works such as "Kyo Sangin," "Haikaiitsuku no Tawagoto," "Kocho Hangan," and "Hinagata."
