A former town in Monou County in central eastern Miyagi Prefecture. The Senseki Line runs through the town. Vegetables and pears are grown on several rows of beach ridges along the coast and shipped to Sendai and Ishinomaki. Rice farming is also thriving here. Formerly a naval air base, the town is currently home to the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. The Kitakami Canal runs along the coast. In April 2005, the town merged with Naruse Town in Monou County to become Higashimatsushima City. Area 49.81 km2 . Population 31,933 (2003). 宮城県中東部,桃生(ものう)郡の旧町。仙石線が通じる。海岸の数列の浜堤上で野菜,ナシが栽培され,仙台,石巻へ出荷する。米作も盛ん。かつての海軍航空隊基地で,現在,航空自衛隊が駐屯。海岸沿いに北上運河がある。2005年4月桃生郡鳴瀬町と合併し市制,東松島市となる。49.81km2。3万1933人(2003)。
