Japanese: アイアシ - あいあし

A large perennial grass (illustration) that grows in colonies in sandy marshes on the coast. It has a thick, long, horizontal rhizome underground, and the stems form clumps that are coarse, over 1m tall and up to 7mm in diameter. The leaves are numerous and grow at the nodes of the stem. They are broad, linear, hard, and hairless, up to 40cm long and 3cm wide, and have a long sheath at the base. From early summer to early autumn, a large inflorescence with 5 to 12 thick tufts in a corymb is produced at the top of the stem. The tufts are about 10cm long, whitish green with a slight purple tinge.

海岸の砂地の湿地に群生する大型のイネ科の多年草（イラスト）。地下に太く長く横にはった根茎があり，茎は株を作り，粗大で，高さ1m余り，直径7mmにも及ぶ。葉は茎の節につき，多数。幅の広い線形で，硬く，無毛，長さ40cm，幅3cmにもなり，基部には長い鞘（さや）がある。初夏から初秋の間に，茎の頂に5～12個の太い総（ふさ）を散房状につけた大型の花序を出し，総は長さ10cm内外で，白っぽい緑色で多少紫色を帯びる。
