Born: April 26, 1787 in Tübingen [Died] November 13, 1862. Tübingen. A German Romantic poet. Famous for his folk-song-style lyric poems and ballads. He studied law at the University of Tübingen, became a lawyer, and was elected to the parliament. After the failure of German unification, he lectured on medieval German literature as a professor at his alma mater. He also showed a deep interest in folk song research, and wrote many works in this field. His widely recited works, such as Schäfers Sonntagslied (Shepherd's Sunday Songs) and Des Knaben Berglied (Boys' Mountain Songs), were both written before he was 20 years old. His lyric poems have a simple beauty, and sing of the nature of his hometown, Swabia, with simple emotions, but they try to sing of national and ethnic emotions rather than personal lyricism. In addition to ballads, he also showed his talent in epic poems based on the German and Latin Middle Ages. His most famous academic work is Walther von der Vogelweide (1822).
